CANTEMUS CHOIR HAVANT
CANTEMUS (Latin for “Let Us Sing”) was established in 1986.
Early concerts were given in a variety of places including Ditcham Park School, Goodwood House, Stansted House and churches in Southsea, Havant and Westbourne; recent concerts have taken place at Havant United Reformed Church, St James’s Church Emsworth, South Hayling United Reformed Church, St Peter's Church North Hayling, St George's Church Waterlooville, Waterlooville Baptist Church and St Thomas's Church, Old Bedhampton.
At first a small group meeting on Hayling Island, Cantemus later began rehearsing at Warblington school, off-island, to attract membership from a wider area, as it does today. In later years the rehearsal venue switched to Bedhampton Methodist Church. Among those who joined in Warblington was Robin McInnes, who, although no longer singing with Cantemus, continues to provide us with the music practice files and CDs so essential to our performances, for which we are very grateful!
The choir’s repertoire has covered works from the 16th to 21st centuries, sacred and secular, accompanied and unaccompanied.
We have had a number of Musical Directors and accompanists since 1986, benefiting hugely from their professional expertise. A long and productive association with Chichester Cathedral has provided the choir with talented musicians who have directed, accompanied, sung with and composed for us.
